Board of Supervisors Meeting - Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Request by the Library to approve the creation of a new capital project, New Cambria Library Site Exploration (#320028) and a corresponding budget adjustment in the amount of $100,000 from the Friends of the Library and $100,000 from Library Facilities Planning Reserves.

Our mission is to support our community's library.

Since 1991, our membership dues, sales, and donations have been a significant source of funds for purchasing books and materials, extending open hours, accessing the Internet, providing programs for both children and adults, purchasing land for our future (larger!) library, and other needs that are not possible with reduced county funding.

Friends of the Cambria Library meet at 8:30 am on the first Wednesday of every month at the Cambria Library.

The Cambria Branch Library is one of San Luis Obispo County's most heavily used libraries on a per capita basis. There are over 4,800 cardholders (662 are children!), with a population of 6,600.

Every month, the Cambria Library Staff provides approximately 2,000 individual checkouts for an annual total of over 100,000 items.

Inquiries requiring librarian assistance average 720 a month and the Internet is being utilized between 115-120 hours monthly.

And yet, of 4,800 cardholders, only 250 individuals or families were paid members of the Friends of the Cambria Library last year.
