In The Spirit Of The Huichol A Celebration Of Life For me, making art is about exploration and experimentation; exploration of ideas and locations, experimentation with materials and processes. No crazy idea is too far out there. Sometimes my inspiration comes from materials i have collected and saved or bits and pieces from my collage treasure box; a collection of stuff most people would throw away. These pieces were also defined by the size of my work space. Always my art and my writing are informed by my surroundings and day to day experiences. A poem might reveal itself in a photograph or a painting might inspire a poem. All rely on a spirit of child-like freedom and the joy found in turning an idea or a thought into something you can touch. The Huichol Indians believe that they are here to live a creative life in every way. They believe it is their calling to entertain the gods; and so they do so through the clothes they wear, the art they create, and the rituals they live by. Their "nierikas" or mirror images of the gods, are art that embodies their belief that we all make our own realities. I think i am a wandering member of the huichol tribe, long separated, who has finally rediscovered the joy in creating something every single day! And so - in these pieces that i offer for your entertainment, i hope you will find one that will make you smile - and perhaps think about pausing just long enough to recognize, and then celebrate, the joy to be found in the simple things, the little things, the single moment.
